What you pay
The Corten Steel Raised Garden Bed is $239.99 CAD on amazon.ca. The Block Series Long Box Planter is $134.99 CAD. That's a $105 gap between two planters from the same brand, which makes the question genuinely worth asking.
Material and long-term durability
The Corten is 16-gauge steel. It rusts on the surface by design, and that patina is what protects the structure underneath, Veradek states it will not rust through. The Block Series is made from high-grade recycled plastic with double-wall construction, rated for temperatures from -30°C to +50°C, which covers every realistic Canadian season. The plastic has a real weakness some owners report: thin corners that can crack on arrival or under planting pressure, particularly when ordered in multiples.
Planting capacity
The Corten's 48" x 24" footprint holds 8.7 cu ft of soil, enough for serious vegetable growing, including root vegetables that need 10–12 inches of depth to form properly. The Block Long Box large variant (38" x 15") tops out at 20.3 gallons (roughly 2.7 cu ft). That's less than a third of the Corten's volume, and the shallower profile rules out anything with a meaningful taproot. Herbs, flowers, and shallow-rooted plants work fine in it. Tomatoes, carrots, or brassicas do not. The Corten wins on raw growing capacity by a margin that isn't close.
Assembly and setup
The Corten ships flat in panels and assembles in around 15 minutes, multiple owners confirm this, though a few report missing hardware requiring a hardware store run. The Block Series arrives fully assembled with no tools needed, which is a genuine advantage if you're setting up on a rooftop, balcony, or anywhere you'd rather not deal with screws.
Aesthetics and placement
The Corten's rust patina is irreversible and develops over weeks of weather exposure. During the initial phase, rust drips, Veradek recommends a protective barrier under the planter to avoid staining patios or decking. The Block Series in black or white keeps a clean, permanent finish without the maintenance concern, which makes it a better fit for decks, balconies, and shared outdoor spaces where staining matters.
