The exclusive games gap keeps widening
PlayStation 5 launched with Spider-Man: Miles Morales and has since delivered Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us Part I. Xbox Series X launched with... Gears 5 running at higher resolution.
That disparity hasn't closed. Sony's first-party studios released 12 exclusives through 2023. Microsoft released 3, if you count Forza Horizon 5. The Bethesda acquisition was supposed to change this math, but Starfield arrived buggy and Redfall was universally panned.
The counter-argument is Game Pass. For $7 monthly, you get day-one access to all Microsoft exclusives plus a rotating library of 400+ games. That's compelling if you play 3+ games per month. Most console owners don't.
Performance differences you'll actually notice
Both consoles target 4K/60fps. In practice, most games run at 1800p upscaled, with occasional drops to 1440p during intensive scenes. The Xbox Series X has a slight edge in multiplatform games — typically 5-10% higher resolution or more consistent frame rates.
The difference shows up in demanding titles. Cyberpunk 2077 runs at native 4K on Series X versus 1728p on PS5. Assassin's Creed Valhalla maintains 60fps more consistently on Xbox. But we're talking about the difference between excellent and very good performance.
Loading speeds favor the PS5. Its custom SSD loads games 15-20% faster than Series X. That translates to 2-3 seconds saved on most loading screens — not revolutionary, but noticeable over hundreds of hours.
The controller situation nobody talks about honestly
DualSense controllers fail frequently. Stick drift appears within 6-12 months for many users, and replacement controllers cost $75. Sony's warranty covers it for one year, but that's often when problems start appearing.
Xbox controllers aren't immune — they develop the same stick drift issues. The difference is the timeline. Most Xbox controllers last 18-24 months before showing problems. Replacement controllers cost $60.
Both companies know about this. Neither has meaningfully improved build quality since launch. Budget for controller replacements regardless of which console you choose.
Storage costs add up faster than expected
Both consoles ship with roughly 650GB of usable storage after system files. That's 6-8 modern games. When you need more space, your options are limited.
PS5 supports M.2 SSD expansion, but compatible drives meeting Sony's speed requirements cost $50-200 for 1TB. Installation requires opening the console and following a 12-step process that voids warranty in some regions.
Xbox uses proprietary expansion cards. They're easier to install — slide into a slot on the back — but cost $220 for 1TB. The convenience premium is real.
External USB drives work for backwards-compatible games only. You can't run PS5 or Series X games from external storage.
Backwards compatibility shows Microsoft's advantage
Xbox Series X runs Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Many older titles get automatic resolution and frame rate boosts through Microsoft's backwards compatibility program. Your digital library carries forward completely.
PS5 plays most PS4 games but nothing older without streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium. That's frustrating if you own PS3 or PS2 games digitally — they don't transfer.
This matters more as console generations extend. If you've invested in one ecosystem over multiple generations, switching platforms means abandoning that library.
Game Pass changes how you think about buying games
Game Pass Ultimate includes Xbox Live Gold, cloud gaming, and day-one access to Microsoft exclusives. At $7 monthly, it costs $200 annually. That's equivalent to 3-4 full-price games.
The value proposition works if you play new releases regularly. Starfield, Forza Motorsport, and Lies of P all launched on Game Pass in 2023. If you played all three at launch, Game Pass saved you $40.
But Game Pass games disappear. Third-party titles typically stay 6-18 months before rotating out. If you're halfway through a 60-hour RPG when it leaves the service, you're buying it at full price or abandoning your progress.
The real deciding factors
Choice comes down to three questions. Do you want to play Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, and future Naughty Dog games? You need a PS5. Do you prefer the Game Pass model over buying individual games? Xbox makes more sense. Do you have a large library from previous generations? Stick with your ecosystem.
Everything else — performance, controller preference, storage costs — matters less than those core decisions. Both consoles deliver excellent gaming experiences. The difference is in the games you can actually play.
